Carlos Slim Helu Carlos

He is the king of the telecom world. The Mexican businessman Carlos Slim Helú has always been amongst the top three rich people of the world. His father Julián Slim moved to Mexico City from Lebanon to establish a dry fruit store and a business in real estate.

 

Slim studied engineering at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. He took advantage of the monopolies in the government policies to establish a stranglehold on the Telecom Business in Mexico. His Company Teléfonos de México SAB and its cellphone affiliate Telcel have 92% of all fixed-lines and 73% of all cellphones in Mexico. He went on acquisition spree to take over companies in telecommunications, cigarettes, construction, mining, bicycles, soft-drinks, airlines, hotels, railways, banking and printing. His companies total up to a third of the value of all companies forming part of the Mexico’s Stock Index. His fortune is worth 7% of Mexico’s Annual Economic Output.
